WILTSHIRE rounded off South West Week in disappointing fashion after suffering defeat at the hands of Somerset in their final inter-county championship contest yesterday.

Hosts Wiltshire found themselves four points in arrears following the morning singles matches at Cumberwell Park in Bradford on Avon after winning just two of the eight matches contested.

That was despite an emphatic 7&5 victory for James Cooper over Somerset’s Alister Balcombe in the opening match.

Dom Baverstoke-Seaman and Max Drayton were then both beaten 4&3 by Sam Sloman and Will Poole respectively, but a 2&1 success for Jamie Cooper over Sam Fernley levelled things up at 2-2.

However, Wiltshire failed to contend over the final four matches to finish as Simon Futcher fell to a 5&4 defeat to Phil White and Tom Law lost 4&2 to Craig Adams.

Tom Stagg was beaten 3&2 by Jonathan Grace before Garry Slade lost 1-up to Tom Trowbridge in the final match.

Trailing by four entering the foursomes, Wiltshire knew only wins in all four ties could rescue a draw.

Max Drayton and Tom Law got Wiltshire off to a fine start with a 2&1 triumph over Sam Sloman and Will Poole.

But hopes of a late comeback were dashed when Sam Fernley and Phil White defeated James Cooper and Simon Futcher 2&1.
