SUPERMARINE have been celebrating their 60th anniversary in style with a series of special matches this year to mark the occasion.

They played the English Bowling Association (EBA) early in the season and then followed that up with games against Wiltshire Bowls Association (The Moonrakers) and a combined Wiltshire men's and ladies county team led by their respective presidents, Ann Hindley (Wilton) and Adie Lloyd (North Wilts).

This coming Friday sees Supermarine president and long-serving secretary Mike Baycroft lead the club into their last special match of the season (2pm).

Supermarine have several teams competing in both the S&D men's and women's leagues, aptly the opposition on Friday will be provided by a combined Swindon & District Men's and Women's Bowling Association side which will include both respective presidents, Rob Williams (Westlecot) and Janet Daniell (Wootton Bassett).

n THE men's Swindon & District competition finals will be staged this coming Saturday at Rodbourne Cheney Bowling Club.

They will be held in two sessions commencing at 10am and 2pm.

Wootton Bassett will feature prominently with five representatives in the finals with Tom Walkley and Richard Buckland competing in two a piece. And in two finals - singles and triples - they will be all Bassett affairs.

Seven events in total will be contested. The finalists for the Officers Cup have been known for sometime but the last two in the other six disciplines were only decided last week.

After Wootton Bassett next best clubs are Swindon and West End who will both have two representatives in finals.

In the Champion of Champions Purton's Ray Sowden, who played at Worthing last week in the last stages of the national pairs with Chris Cheesley, faces Shari Akhavan (Swindon).
