SWINDON Shock opened their regular-season account with a home win after seeing off Cardiff Met Archers 113-97 at New College.

Ed Potter was the fourth highest scorer across the National League with 31 points, while he received impressive support from Mantas Kmita and Antonio Wilburn who put up scores of 29 and 23 respectively.

The victory means Shock are now unbeaten all three of their games so far this season, spanning the National Shield, National Cup and National League Division Three South.

Player-coach David Colclough saw his team fall behind by the end of the first quarter, which ended 32-27 to the visitors.

However, dominant displays in the second and third saw them close the gap and open an advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

After a late rally from the Welsh side, Swindon held on for an impressive win.

“It was a fantastic result, we started really hot and I think we must have scored the first five or six times down the court,” he said.

“We were giving up points defensively at the same time and then we got into a little bit of foul trouble.

“I kind of lost it with the officials and they then got control back in the game so we were able to tie and lead the game.

“Once we scored 100 points, I think we went into cruise control. Antonio wanted to push it further but I said there was no point in getting anyone hurt.”

Once the game was as good as won for the hosts, Colclough opted to dish out court time to those on the bench.

And despite conceding a couple of baskets, the Shock coach believes his side are well equipped to challenge this year, both home and away.

“We were up by 30 points by that point as well so I pulled the starting players and began rotating the bench players in and coasted to the win,” he added.

“Once we took our foot off of the gas we let some players on and work through some things which was nice.

“I thought we played them even with our bench which I thought was great. “We have a lot of depth this season, compared to last year.

“We’re so deep right now, we can kind of replace people and play both big and small.

“If we’d have had some people pull out last year, it was a death sentence and meant I had to play a lot.”

Shock have their first away game of the season this Saturday when they travel to the capital to face London BC Medelynas.
