DAN Jones concluded that Swindon Town Ladies let themselves down at the weekend, as they crashed to a 2-0 loss at Buckland Athletic in Division One South West of the FA Women’s National League.

Jones’ side struggled to establish a foothold in Sunday’s tie, and let goals slip either side of half-time as Carla Staddon and Natalie Warman netted for the hosts.

The result denied Jones’ side an opportunity to make inroads on eighth-placed Larkhall Athletic, positioned six points above Town – and are their next opponents a week on Sunday.

Several talking points from Sunday’s game were discussed by Jones and his assistant with a view to improving the team’s threat for their next game.

But he admitted players must hold their hands up for not delivering in Devon, and he expects more in the final three games of the season.

Jones said: “If I’m giving an honest assessment, we weren’t good enough.

“Myself and my assistant have talked about it – did we get it wrong, did we set-up wrong, did we pick the wrong personnel?

“The players have got to take some responsibility and hold their hands up too.”

The Town boss identified Buckland as a team that his side is capable of beating, which made Sunday’s loss tougher to take.

“Buckland, to my mind, is a team we should be capable of beating,” added Jones.

“But we have to perform to do that, and we didn’t.

“We handed them the result, rather than making them work for it.

“It’s disappointing because of the results and performances we have had recently. We went into the game off the back of a really encouraging result the week before.

“We let ourselves down, to be perfectly honest.”
