INDIVIDUAL mistakes from senior players will not be tolerated too often, according to Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens after three errors from defender Mathieu Baudry led to goals in a 3-1 defeat to Peterborough United on Saturday.

Despite going into the break a goal to the good, a weak header from the Frenchman saw Peterborough pick up possession deep in Town’s half before Jonson Clarke-Harris equalised via Baudry’s attempted block shortly after half-time.

A silly challenge from Town’s stand-in captain forced referee Leigh Doughty to point to the spot on the hour before a mis-judged header allowed Ryan Broom time to race past Baudry and slot home a third late on.

Wellens was critical of his senior defender after defeat to Blackpool, and once again the Town boss was in no mood to explain away Baudry’s deficiencies following a disappointing loss to Peterborough.

Wellens said: “The referee wasn’t the reason why we lost that game – he’s the reason we didn’t go 2-0 up – but we made three mistakes.

“The penalty is just so avoidable it’s untrue, and then they get one near the end where Baudry goes to head it down and missed the header, and then they’ve gone through one-on-one.

“If the opposition are making loads and loads of chances against us and we’re conceded three or four, I’d be worried.

“But the opposition are making two or three chances and actually converting them. It’s still a worry, don’t get me wrong.

“But people will let me down. They might let me down once and I’ll probably give them another chance, but if they keep letting me down then they won’t play.”

Defeat for Town saw the Robins drop outside the play-off places to seventh.

Wellens insisted his side can still compete at the right end of the table, as long as they cut out individual errors that have cost the team several goals in the opening weeks of the new season.

He said: “The goals are individual errors.

“If we’re not set up properly and defensively we’re all over the place, then I’ll take the responsibility for that.

“But when you’re just asking centre halves to just defend, and if the ball is up in the air just to head it out of danger, then do it.

“If you start trying to bring it down and you miss it, and then you let their striker in one against one, then how can I control that?”
