JOHN Sheridan has been urged to leave his job at Wigan Athletic and take over as manager of Swindon Town, according to reports.

The current Wigan chief is now hot favourite to replace former manager Richie Wellens at the County Ground, and bookies have cut his odds to 2/5 on.

The Sun sports reporter, Alan Nixon suggested Town chairman Lee Power is hopeful a deal can be agreed before the weekend and Sheridan would be able to travel to the Montgomery Waters Meadow to watch his new team take on Shrewsbury Town this Saturday.

Sheridan has previously worked under Power at Irish club, Waterford. Following his termination at Chesterfield on January 2, 2020, the Mancunian took over at Waterford for an eight-game spell before returning to England to take the top job at Wigan.

The Wigan boss only signed his short-term deal with the Latics on September 11, but could already depart the crisis club with them bottom of League One, in administration and having recently been knocked out of the FA Cup by National League North, Chorley last Saturday.

Wigan's Spanish owners are apparently keen on Sheridan sticking around through this period of uncertainty, though the 56-year-old is likely to jump ship in favour of a move to Wiltshire.
