SWINDON Town winger Jonny Smith believes the club could still mount a play-off push despite their current lowly position – recalling his time at Tranmere Rovers as evidence.

With Rovers languishing down in 19th in the League Two table, an outstanding winning run just after Christmas propelled the Merseyside club up into the end-of-season play-offs.

Smith’s then-team beat Forest Green Rovers in the semi-final before triumphing over Newport County at Wembley Stadium to book their place in League One.

The Bristol City winger said that while it might be difficult to believe right now, football does occasionally produce those kind of surprises and Swindon could be the next team to rocket up the table and spring a shock.

Regarding Town’s current position, Smith said: “It’s the same situation to when I was at a club a couple of years ago. We were conceding late goals, or we were conceding early, but the general play was there.

“After Christmas, we went seven or eight wins on the bounce, and we started looking up at the play-offs – and we ended getting into the play-offs.

“Anything can happen in football, it’s such a fickle game, it can change so quickly. At one stage, we were looking over our shoulder and thinking we’re in a relegation battle to the next minute, we were looking towards the play-offs.”

Town find themselves 21st in League One and are currently 13 points off Ipswich Town in sixth with a tough away day against Doncaster Rovers ahead.

Smith believes there is no reason why the club cannot begin a long winning run at the Keepmoat Stadium tonight, and with the matches thinning out ever so slightly, time on the training ground could help manager John Sheridan turn Town’s fortunes around.

Smith said: “Football is a lot about momentum, so when things are going well you can pick up a lot of wins in a short amount of time because the games are coming so thick and fast.

“When you’re losing, sometimes you need a bit more space to reset, but we haven’t had that very much because there’s been a game in two days.

“But we’ve got to stay positive, keep doing the right things, and keep listening to the gaffer and Tommy (Wright) because they do know what they’re doing, everyone needs to believe that.

“They’re two top coaches, so we need to keep trusting in them and carry on doing what we’re doing.”
