SWINDON Town assistant manger Tommy Wright revealed the club is “close” to a couple of signings but suggested there would not be any new players officially announced before next week.

Manager John Sheridan has previously stated he would like two new strikers in during this window, while Wright added that the club may attempt to add one more player on top of that.

The Scot said Town would potentially be looking at either another midfielder or a defender to add to their ranks in order to ensure their status as a League One club at the end of the season.

Asked during Thursday’s pre-match press conference whether there were any updates on the club’s transfer success during what was a quiet week at the County Ground, Wright was initially unhappy to disappoint before giving fans a glimmer of hope.

He said: “There’s no progress but we are trying very, very hard to get players in. It’s not an easy time, January, it’s the same for most clubs.

“We feel we’ve got some good players in so far, we’re pleased with those that have come in, and we’d like to add another two or three maybe.

“There’s nothing concrete at the moment, we’re close, but nothing concrete.

“There’s nothing on players going out right now either, but I wouldn’t rule that out. No offers for anyone either.”

John Sheridan admitted after the win at Ipswich that Swindon would be more likely to sign players on loan if any more deals are done at SN1 during this window.

But with five loan players already at the club, players would miss out on the match day squad if any more are brought in.

Wright said he would be happy to “juggle the squad” and any new player brought in on loan would not necessarily spell the end of another one’s time at Swindon.

He said: “There’s always the scenario like with Jordan Stevens where you can send one back and get a new one in.

“Jonny Smith has done well, Tyler Smith has done well. If we had to keep them, it wouldn’t be a worry.

“If we had one or two too many loans then you’d just have to juggle the squad in order to play your five.

“I wouldn’t say their futures are up in the air, we know other clubs would probably be interested in them.

“We’re happy with them, but if somebody keep available that we really wanted in a certain position then we might have to look at that.”
