SWINDON Town failed to make it consecutive victories once again after a rudderless display saw John Sheridan’s men lose 1-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town.

In the first half of a particularly scrappy affair at the County Ground, a sensational volley from Harrison Chapman settled the game in the visitors’ favour and saw Swindon drop back into the League One relegation zone on goal difference.

A rare win for Shrewsbury in Wiltshire was just the club’s second in 20 attempts – a run stretching back to 1961 – and first since 1995.

Swindon made two changes to the side that beat Wigan Athletic 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Due to Dion Conroy's one-game suspension, Rob Hunt came in at right-back while Akin Odimayo shifted into his favoured centre-back role.

Meanwhile, there was a debut for winger Jordon Garrick in place of Tyler Smith, who completely missed out on the squad. New signing, Christopher Missilou started on the bench.

Following an early five-minute stoppage for treatment to two Shrewsbury defenders after a clash of heads, Swindon had the first chance of the afternoon in the eighth minute.

Lyden crossed into the box for Brett Pitman, but it was just a shade too high and the striker headed over.

Up the other end, Shrewsbury's Josh Vela slipped in Sean Goss who struck low and hard as Travers turned it away with his feet.

A scrappy period followed as only Shaun Whalley’s blocked effort featured in terms of chances before the Shrews went close again.

Josh Vela chested a clipped ball into the middle down before side-footing at goal. Another save with his feet from Travers denied Shrews the opener.

Swindon had an excellent opportunity to go a goal up after Garrick slipped Jordan Lyden in with a lovely touch, but the Australian decided to pull it back instead of shooting from a tight angle.

Less than 60 seconds later, Sheridan’s men were punished for their wastefulness as Chapman volleyed a stunning goal in from 25 yards to give Shrewsbury the lead.

A long ball forward was knocked down by Curtis Main, and Chapman ran onto it before taking a touch and lashing his right-footed effort in off the post.

Inside seven minutes of added time, and Swindon wasted a half-chance to pull themselves level when Matt Palmer’s deep free-kick was fumbled by Matija Sarkic.

Hallam Hope collected and laid back to Lyden, but the skipper’s cross from the left was wildly overhit and the chance drifted away.

The hosts had the final chance of the first half after Thompson sent a delightful cross into the middle that Garrick volleyed at goal.

Unfortunately for Swindon, someone in blue and amber got a very important block inside the box to deny the hosts an equaliser.

Swindon had the first shot on target of the second half too when Pitman’s header from Palmer’s free-kick was poked goalwards by Jack Payne. Sarkic stayed big to deny the dominative midfielder in the 55th minute.

Minutes later and the hosts almost pulled level with their best chance of the game up to that point. After Payne’s short corner was worked over to Thompson on the left, the left-back’s cross was headed onto the roof of the net by Pitman.

With 20 minutes to go, Shrewsbury’s goalscorer tried to add to his tally when driving down the left and cutting onto his right foot, but his curling effort was far too high.

Inside the final 10 minutes, a long lump forward found Palmer on the right and he blasted a ball across into the middle.

After Curran laid off to Pitman, the Swindon striker could only poke tamely at Sarkic.

Despite being desperate for an equalising goal in the closing stages, Swindon never came close to creating a good opportunity and Shrewsbury easily hung on to take the points back up the M5.
