SWINDON Town forward Scott Twine missed out on League One's goal of the month award for January as Bristol Rovers' Luke McCormick scooped the prize instead.

Twine's 30-yard screamer against Ipswich Town was fancied by many to be a goal of the season contender even, but the 21-year-old had to settle for second place in the monthly competition.

The Swindon striker accumulated 39.9 per cent of the 5,946 total votes - almost three per cent behind winner McCormick, who scored 42.7 per cent thanks to his free-kick against Crewe Alexandra.

Once the vote - which was carried out on Twitter - was finalised, many fans expressed their surprise at the destination of the monthly winner, with several fans of other clubs stating the award should have gone to the Swindon youngster.

Fans of Charlton Athletic, Portsmouth, Wycombe Wanderers and even Bristol Rovers felt the final result did not reflect the true winner.

Wycome fan @WillHs2 said: "Anyone with any brains cells can identify a deadball free-kick from outside the box is worse than a 35 Ronaldo-esque shot that has dip, power and swerve."

Meanwhile, Charlton fan @Aidan_66 said: "How did Twine not win?! That’s why you don’t use Twitter to decide a vote."

Finally, Bristol Rovers fan @ElliotLane11 said: "Twine's goal was much better than this but I'm not complaining!"
