ADVER Sport reporter Jonny Leighfield gives his view on all the latest with Swindon Town Football Club.

The last time Swindon avoided relegation this late in the season was 20 years ago. Danny Invincibile thundered home a superb volley in a must-win game at home to Peterborough United, and Bristol Rovers did Town a huge favour by losing their final quartet of fixtures.

I would love to report on a similar situation this season, but as much as it pains me to say it, I just can’t see it happening. But, as the old saying goes, there is always hope!

My two-and-a-half seasons covering Swindon have seen a failed play-off bid, a title-winning season decided by points-per-game due to a global pandemic, and now potentially a heart-breaking relegation.

If you had told me that would be my future when I first started, I would have absolutely believed you.

One, because I’m extremely gullible, and two, because as history has shown us, there is seldom a quiet season at the County Ground.

Town travel to AFC Wimbledon on Saturday evening four points off safety but with 15 points remaining. Even a gritty, scrappy victory could potentially push the club within a draw of safety.

From a purely dramatic point of view, I am still hoping for a final day shoot-out away at Wigan Athletic - I’m not sure it would be good for anyone’s heart rate, but it would be memorable nonetheless.

But for that to happen, Swindon would have to improve on what was shown during the 2-1 defeat to Rochdale on Tuesday.

Too few players showed their best selves, while the long-ball tactic that was deployed played straight into Rochdale’s hands.

Manager John Sheridan said himself that he rates his team as one of the best footballing sides in the division - if that’s really the case, go and prove it then.

Play Wimbledon off the park and give Town fans hope going into the final furlong.
