SHOULD Clem Morfuni's attempted takeover prove successful, the Australian is targeting Newport County boss Michael Flynn as Swindon Town's next manager, according to reports.

Town are on the hunt for the club's third manager in just over two months after John Sheridan quit in April and replacement John McGreal agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent last Friday.

The Sun on Sunday's football reporter Alan Nixon first sent out a Twitter post early on Sunday morning stating the "new regime on the way wants Flynn at Newport as boss", referring to Morfuni's Axis group.

However, according to bookmaker, BetVictor, the current Newport manager is second favourite for the job behind ex-Town chief Mark Cooper.

Cooper - who only recently signed a three-year contract with Town's League Two rivals Barrow - is listed as the 11/10 favourite, just ahead of Flynn at 13/8.

Previously linked Robbie Fowler is third favourite at 16/1 while Paul Tisdale (16/1) and Chris Powell (20/1) make up the top five.

Flynn guided Newport to the League Two play-off final once again this summer, losing out to Morecambe via a controversial penalty late on.

Speaking to the South Wales Argus after the game, the 40-year-old expressed his concern around the Exiles hiring a sporting director and suggested he may walk away from the club he has been in charge of since 2017 as a result.

Flynn said: “I’ve got a year left. They (Newport) have employed a sporting director with a three-year contract so I need to sit down and see which direction the club are going in and where we go from there.

“I can’t say 100 per cent that I will be back in August. A lot of things have gone on this season that I have not been happy with, I’ve kept them quiet and we will be sitting down and having a conversation.

“A few things need to get ironed out. I love this club more than anything, that’s probably why it gets to me as much as it does. Let’s just say there might be two different ways where we think the club is going.”

It remains unclear whether Flynn has spoken to Newport's board about his plans and whether he is at all interested in speaking to another club about taking over there.
