SWINDON Supermarine continued their pre-season campaign with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Wantage Town on Tuesday night.

Marine traveled to the Southern League Division One Central outfit looking for just their second victory of the summer, having been beaten by Gloucester City and Swindon Town before drawing 1-1 against Bracknell Town on Saturday.

Lee Spalding's side immediately found their stride at Alfredian Park and went a goal up in the 14th minute courtesy of a Conor McDonagh tap-in.

The visitors then doubled their lead after half an hour when Zak Kotwica and a Marine trialist combined for the former to lift the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper.

It would get even better for Marine before the break too after McDonagh broke the offisde trap to slot home a third.

Wantage - who were looking for the club's first win over Marine in any competition since March 1999 - initially went close to pulling a goal back before the interval, only for a superb double-stop from ex-Swindon Town goalkeeper Rhys Evans to deny them.

Evans was beaten shortly after, however, as Wantage's Josh Tooke was set up by Harvey Scholes to score.

The goals continued to flow in the second half too - Wantage's Josh Elms dispatching their second from the spot after Matt Liddiard pulled his man back inside the box.

Henry Spalding added a cheekily-lobbed fourth on the hour before Frankie Artus netted his first with 12 minutes to go and leave Marine 5-2 up.

Jake Pemberton struck a fantastic long-range effort for the hosts inside the final 10 minutes, and when a mix-up at the back allowed Wantage to score a fourth, nerves began jangling for Marine.

With very little time left, Lee Spalding's men hung on for a morale-boosting victory.

Marine's next pre-season friendly is away at Highworth Town on Saturday with a 3pm kick-off at the Save on Tyres Stadium.
