SWINDON Town have taken promising Ipswich Town striker Tyreece Simpson on trial this week, according to reports.

The 19-year-old is thought to be training with Ben Garner’s squad with a view to potentially signing a season-long loan deal once the relevant section of the club’s transfer embargo is lifted in the coming days.

Simpson has already made four substitute appearances for the League One side along with two EFL Trophy starts last season against Gillingham and Crawley Town and a substitute showing against Tottenham Hotspur U23s in 2019-20.

The powerful striker – who was offered a rugby union contract with Leicester Tigers prior to joining the Tractor Boys’ academy set up in 2018 – is yet to score for the senior side or the U18s in 10 appearances, but is thought to hold a great amount of promise and talent.

Reports from Suffolk have suggested that a loan move would be the next logical step for Simpson, who sees his initial contract with the Tractor Boys run out at the end of this season, with Swindon’s director of football appearing to have taken a punt on the untested forward.

After Simpson signed his first professional contract in March 2020, former Ipswich boss Paul Lambert earmarked the youngster as one to watch.

Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times, Lambert said: “He (Tyreece) is a strong, strong kid with a nice touch. I thought him and (Armando) Dobra did well when they came on. He’s one for the future is Tyreece, as is Dobra and some of the others. They need time.”

The 19-year-old had been among the goals for the U23s regularly last season, and scored the winner in Ipswich’s Professional Development League Two South 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest back in April.

Simpson received a ball down the right channel before holding off and powering past his marker, then calmly sliding the ball into the opposite corner with the assuredness of a season professional.

EADT reporter Andy Warren – formerly of Adver Sport – said the goal “showed what Simpson is all about.”

The last Ipswich player to play for Swindon on loan was Luke Woolfenden during the 2018-19 campaign.
