After a Covid outbreak ripped through Swindon's squad forcing them to abandon Saturday's game against Walsall, the club's CEO has revealed players are reluctant to get the vaccine.

Rob Angus took part in an Official Supporters Club’s On The Sofa Q&A on Thursday last week where he expressed his disappointment the game was cancelled.

He said: "It’s a real disappointment as you say, we were hoping for a real big crowd. Clem’s back in the country and it would’ve been his first game back, it’s the last game before Christmas, and a big celebration hopefully, of having Matty Taylor back at the County ground as well."

Mr. Angus said the decision was made because 15 players and coaching staff had come down with the illness, this meant that Swindon didn't have enough players to field a team.

New rules brought in by the EFL after Saturday's game was cancelled state that if a squad has 14 players, including a goalkeeper, the game must be played. Even under those rules, Rob said Swindon wouldn't have had enough.

He was then asked how many town players were vaccinated, with EFL figures suggesting 75% of players in the football league were double-jabbed.

"It is a growing number, it’s around about 50% of the squad off the top of my head. I don’t know if that’s exactly accurate or not, but there’ll be more due. That’s people that have got both jabs."

He went on to add that so far, none of the players had experienced severe symptoms before explaining why some of the squad were hesitant to get the jab.

"We’ve got professional footballers who would be worried about having a reaction to a vaccine that might put them out for a game or two, or their performances go down and therefore might lose their place. So, I can understand that some players might have that reticence.

"We do encourage all players to get vaccinated but it is their choice."
