TYREECE Simpson must agree a new contract with Ipswich Town “pretty soon” or he will be unable to return to Swindon Town on loan this season, according to head coach Ben Garner.

The 19-year-old striker was enjoying a successful first loan spell in Wiltshire, scoring 11 goals in 30 appearances, before being recalled to Portman Road last Sunday – seemingly out of the blue.

With Simpson’s contract set to run out in the summer, the Tractor Boys do have the option to extend that deal by a further 12 months.

Although, it appears Kieran McKenna’s men would like Simpson to sign fresh terms entirely as they aim to potentially cash in on their young asset.

Garner says Swindon have had very little contact with Ipswich since the striker was recalled but told reporters in his pre-Colchester United press conference that the option for Simpson to return is there so long as a solution can be found quickly.

Garner said: “Tyreece was called back by Ipswich for contractual reasons on their part – they want him to agree a new deal there, and if he does that he will be allowed back out on loan.

“We haven’t heard anything this week in terms of progress on that – that’s as much as I know.”

The Swindon boss was then asked whether Swindon would be Simpson’s first-choice destination should a solution be found.

Garner said: “That’s the initial conversation, but we’ve had no further contact since.

“Unless a new deal can be agreed between Tyreece and Ipswich pretty soon, then he’ll be staying there for the remainder of the season.”

The Swindon boss went on to discuss the frustration felt regarding the recall but stated no trust has been lost with parent clubs as football changes daily and the feeder club has to prioritise its own situation first.

Garner said: “We’ve had good communication with Ipswich throughout his loan, we’ve been really happy with his development, and he’s been really happy here.

“He was very, very disappointed to be leaving here because of the football he’s played and how much he’s progressed, but it was out of our hands.

“It wasn’t something we could control, it was an issue between Tyreece, his agent, and Ipswich. We can’t be frustrated about it because it’s out of our hands.”
