HEAD coach Ben Garner was delighted to see his team “find a different way to win” after Swindon Town beat Bradford City 2-1 at the Utilita Energy Stadium on Saturday.

Jack Payne’s 96th-minute penalty sealed a comeback win that – despite a couple of key statistics favouring Swindon – the perceived balance of play did not suggest was deserved.

Garner’s men were fighting fires for large spells of the first and second half, and they went behind in the 17th minute after a particularly heavy period of pressure when Gareth Evans volleyed in, but Harry McKirdy equalised against the run of play three minutes later to hand Town a lifeline.

Having so often failed to take all three points when dominating games this term, Town’s boss was really pleased to watch his team scrap through a game and ultimately emerge victorious.

Garner said: “Every game is so important now, and that’s four wins from five.

“I thought we deserved to win last week, but then we didn’t get one we probably deserved last week. We’ve come to Bradford and found a different way to win.

“During this coming period, we’re going to have to play well but also grind performances out and show that resilience.

“We’re not blessed with a big squad, so we’re going to have to roll our sleeves up, patch people up, and get through games.

“If we can come through this run of games with a good return, I really would back us to finish the end of the season strongly.”

On Saturday, Town started two players who were over the age of 25 but showed a great deal of maturity to grind out the win.

Garner shared his immense pride at the performance of his team and believes that game can set the tone for the rest of this month.

He said: “It’s like I’ve said before, the only way of gaining experience is by going through it.

“When you look at the players who have gone through that today – the likes of Ricky Aguiar – they were battling through it and giving everything.

“The two centre-backs, Cooper and O’Brien, battled away. And then we had that experience of Mathieu Baudry coming on which helped us.

“The other ones who have played a lot of games, like Hunt, Reed, Iandolo – everyone was outstanding. Jonny Williams’ work rate and tackling on top of his quality was phenomenal.

“Josh Davison was relentless up there, Harry McKirdy was a constant threat. I could go through the whole team – the effort was top drawer.”
