SWINDON Town head coach Scott Lindsey has promised fans that several of the club’s more established contracted players will feature against Swindon Supermarine on Saturday.

Town take on neighbours Marine in the pair’s annual pre-season friendly fixture at the Webbswood Stadium, with a 3pm kick-off.

Both sides got off to winning starts in their opening fixtures – the League Two side edging past Melksham Town 3-2 while Lee Spalding’s men made light work of Southern League Division One South opponents Cirencester Town thanks to a 3-0 success.

Due to arriving so early in Swindon Town’s pre-season calendar, the Robins’ first run-out featured several youngsters and trialists as senior professionals such as Harry McKirdy, Mathieu Baudry, and Louis Reed stayed behind to complete a different kind of workout.

But with a second week of training behind the squad, Lindsey has assured supporters their favourite faces will be present on Saturday.

Discussing team selection over the first two games, Lindsey said: “Some of those players who didn’t play – for example, Harry McKirdy – had only completed two training sessions before last weekend so there was no way he could have played against Melksham.

“Some of the others had only trained four times since coming back, so it was important they got a gym session in instead of the game.

“If you look at Jonny Williams, he’s been away and only came back last Thursday. So I had to be very, very careful about who could be picked to play against Melksham.

“Supermarine will be a different story because we’ve obviously had another week of training. Saturday will be different; you will see some of these players playing.”

Another of Town’s experienced core to not feature was goalkeeper Lewis Ward. Lindsey opted to put Middlesbrough loanee Sol Brynn in between the sticks and revealed a conversation with his goalkeeping coach Steve Mildenhall resulted in Town doing away with a pre-season tradition.

Lindsey said of Brynn: “I thought he was really good. He had a really good presence. He claimed a few crosses and commanded his area really well – I was really pleased with him.

“We spoke about it in the week before, in terms of whether we were going to give him and Lewis Ward 45 minutes each.

“But Steve Mildenhall (goalkeeping coach) felt it was better that Sol played 90 minutes against Melksham and Ward plays 90 minutes against Supermarine.

“But I thought Sol was really good last week; I actually really enjoyed watching him play.”
