SWINDON Supermarine manager Lee Spalding says he is “buzzing” ahead of the club’s flagship pre-season friendly with Swindon Town.

The two Swindon clubs meet at the Webbswood Stadium this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off as Town aim to extend their winning run in the fixture to 17 in a row.

Town met Marine at the same venue around this time last year, with 856 fans witnessing a 3-2 victory for Swindon thanks to a brace from then-trialist Harry McKirdy and a further strike from Harry Parsons.

With the pair of clubs having played one game each so far, Spalding says the target for both he and opposite number Scott Lindsey will simply be to keep squad members injury-free and ensure all their players gain as much game-time as necessary.

Speaking to Marine’s media team, Spalding said: “It’s always our biggest game of pre-season, the Swindon Town game.

“Hopefully there will be a lot of fans in, and the lads are obviously really looking forward to it.

“There were a few with stiff legs after our first game on Tuesday night, but it’s been about getting in to training and working on our shape, working on how we play without the ball, and how we can hopefully be a threat with it.

“But it’s a really big game that we’re all looking forward to – I’m buzzing.”

Marine come into the game having played on Tuesday night, where they recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Cirencester Town.

Spalding was mostly pleased with what he saw from his players on the artificial surface at the Corinium Stadium but admitted there remains plenty of room for improvement as pre-season continues.

He said: “It's always a lot quicker on the artificial pitches, the game is quicker and the ball flies around quicker. But I thought the boys coped with it really well.

“We’ve have been training indoors a lot recently as well to try and adjust to it. I thought the lads moved the ball really well, the movement was good, the passing was good.

“There were times when I thought we could have relaxed on the ball a bit more and looked after it a bit better, but it’s the first 90 minutes and there is a lot of room for improvement.

“It’s still very early days, but overall we can take a lot of positives from it and we move onto the next one against Swindon Town.”
