SWINDON Supermarine manager Lee Spalding hopes his side’s 2-0 victory over Swindon Town on Saturday will inspire many of the professional club’s fans to return and watch their non-league neighbours more regularly.

Marine produced a rare win over Town thanks to goals from James Harding and a trialist, extending their pre-season record to two wins with five goals scored and none conceded.

Spalding’s men were excellent against Scott Lindsey’s troops and largely limited their visitors to several long-range efforts which rarely tested goalkeeper Connor Johns.

But while the Marine boss was pleased to record a victory, he remained level-headed about the club’s prospects this season and hopes more bumper crowds will inspire the club to a successful Southern League Premier South campaign.

Spalding said: “I think that’s our biggest hope really, that we can up our gates and take this football club forward a little bit more.

“But it’s a positive day for the football club. The players enjoyed it, and I think our existing fans enjoyed it.

“I hope that a few of the Swindon Town fans who saw it will look and think: “they’re not a bad side, I wouldn’t mind watching that again on a Saturday or a midweek if Town are away from home.”

“So I think there were a lot of positives to take from this day from our point of view.”

While opposite number Scott Lindsey insisted Town were not looking to work on anything tactically, the Marine boss revealed he had given his players basic instructions that he was looking to drill home before the start of the season.

Spalding felt his side’s pressing and overall defending was excellent while the forwards were as clinical as they would need to be against any of the bigger sides in Marine’s division.

But the Marine manager refused to get too excited and stated there remains plenty to work on before the opening league game in early August.

Sharing his post-match reaction, Spalding said: “As I said to the players before the game, and I stand by it now, you don’t win anything in pre-season.

“It’s about getting minutes into legs and working on areas that you think need to improve so that you can be ready for the start of the season.

“But there were a lot of people here today and you’d hope that the people that watched it enjoyed the game – it was an entertaining game – and that they’d come back, and we can gain a little bit more support through that.”
