SWINDON Supermarine got their FA Cup campaign underway with a 1-1 draw away against Southern League Division One South side Willand Rovers.

Marine were up against it early on as a thirty-yard effort from midfielder Jack Winsor in the fifth minute skimmed the post with Connor Johns left watching.

Rovers took the lead following a Marine corner as the hosts broke at speed and forward Lewis Hill finished in style from the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

The second half saw an improvement from Marine. A Henry Spalding free-kick hit the wall before Willand’s George Burton dropped a cross soon after, only for Spalding’s effort to be blocked.

Conor McDonagh was next to be denied when his effort beat the keeper only to be cleared off the line by Willand defender Will Richards.

Rovers didn’t hold on for much longer though, as another corner cleared by the hosts fell to Leon Morrison who, on his first start for Marine, fired an unstoppable right-footed half-volley into the top corner in the 52nd minute.

Harry Williams appeared to be tripped just inside the penalty box in the 68th minute but nothing was given, and shortly afterwards a Mat Liddiard header went just wide from a corner.

The last chance of the game saw James Harding blast an effort into the side netting.

Should Supermarine win the replay, they could host either Wimborne Town or Dorchester Town.

Elsewhere, Royal Wootton Bassett Town saw their hopes of extending their FA Cup run extinguished after a bad day at the office resulted in a 4-2 triumph for Paulton Rovers.

The visitors found themselves behind against the run of play. Bailey Gallagher won a penalty as he was felled by the Mircea Ilea. Chris Taylor's spot-kick was comfortably parried by Aaron Sainsbury; however, Tommy Ouldridge scored the rebound.

The hosts' lead lasted just five minutes as Ed Butcher swept home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The game remained level until the 65th minute. Kyle Tooze floated in a free-kick from the left wing and the unmarked Ilea headed home at the far post.

A corner swung in by Nuno Felix found Ilea unmarked again, who coolly swept in from twelve yards for the third.

Sam Collier's side were soon gifted a lifeline as Matt Bennett seized upon an error, surged into the box and squared for substitute Luke Whelan, who found the net with a deft backheel.

Paulton grabbed a fourth in the last minute to kill any faint hopes of a replay. Felix delivered another in-swinging corner and substitute Dave O'Hare rose highest to head home at the near post.

Bassett were left with a sense of what could have been as they came up short in their attempts to equal the club's record run in the FA Cup for a second time in three seasons.
