SWINDON Supermarine manager Lee Spalding called his side’s 5-1 defeat to Farnborough “a disappointing way to go out of the FA Cup” as the Spitfires exited at the third qualifying-round stage on Saturday.

Farnborough booked their spot in the fourth qualifying round thanks to strikes from five different scorers – Ricky Holmes and Kevin Lokko bagging the first two.

Oliver Pendlebury was sent off for the visitors before half-time for a poor tackle on Mat Liddiard, and it appeared as though Spalding’s men had a route back into the contest.

But Freddie Grant and Jon Page rubbed further salt into Marine wounds before Harry Williams pulled a consolation goal back. The scoring was not finished there though, as Liam Ferdinand made it five late on.

Reflecting on a horrible day for his team, Spalding – speaking to club media – said: “It’s a disappointing way to go out of the FA Cup .

“Before the game we spoke about making sure the players didn’t leave anything out there, but it wasn’t that sort of a performance to be honest.

“I felt we started the game poorly, we looked very nervous on the ball, we gave the ball away cheaply and we just made some silly errors that we don’t usually make. It’s disappointing, but we’ve got to make sure we bounce back.”

Elsewhere, in Southern League Division One Central, Highworth Town blew a two-goal half-time lead to lose 3-2 to Welwyn Garden City thanks to a 90th-minute winner.

Ash Edenborough finished brilliantly from a tight angle to put Gareth Davies’ men in front in the 27th minute before Felipe Barcelos added a second nine minutes later.

City hit the base of the post just before the break, but the Worthians maintained their two-goal lead heading into the break.

Alieu Njie pulled a goal back in the early moments of the second half, and Joshua Hutchinson squared the game up in the 56th minute.

Despite looking more likely to win it, Highworth ended up conceding in the second minute of stoppage time - Matther Newman prodded in to steal all three points.

In the Hellenic League Premier Division, Royal Wootton Bassett drew 1-1 at home to Cribbs.

Bassett, who had Jack Hobson-McVeigh sent off late on, equalised through Alan Griffin in the 83rd minute to maintain their strong start to the season.
