SWINDON Town attacker Jonny Williams has been selected in Wales' 2022 Qatar World Cup finals squad.

The 29-year-old becomes just the fourth Robins player in the club's history to be involved in a World Cup while still under contract at the County Ground.

The late Alan McLoughlin was the first Swindon player to go to a World Cup with the Republic of Ireland, heading to Italy in 1990, before Jan Åge Fjørtoft played for Norway at the 1994 edition in the United States of America.

Massimo Luongo travelled with the Australia squad to the 2014 World Cup and featured on the bench for all three of the Socceroos' matches in Brazil.

Wales ended their 64-year wait to play at a World Cup by beating Ukraine 1-0 in a pulsating European play-off final in Cardiff earlier in the summer.

Williams scored in a 2-1 Nations League defeat to Poland back in June, days before Gareth Bale's strike secured the Dragons' spot in Qatar.

The World Cup - which starts on November 21 for Wales - will take Williams away from Town for at least a fortnight.

Rob Page's men open up with a game against the USA before taking on Iran on November 25 and then England on November 29.

Williams, who has another year on his Town deal, is likely to play his last game for a while on Saturday when Town host Tranmere Rovers at the County Ground.

The 29-year-old will then definitely miss Swindon's League Two home game with Crewe Alexandra on Saturday, November 19.

Depending on Wales' fortunes, Williams could miss an away trip to Crawley Town on Saturday, December 3 as well as a home game against AFC Wimbledon a week later and an fixture against Barrow at Holker Street on the day before the final - December 17.
