SWINDON Town fans are urging the club to bring former favourite Charlie Austin back to the County Ground.

The 33-year-old striker is currently playing for Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar after signing a contract with the club in June.

Austin made his name with Town between 2009 and 2011.

He netted an impressive 37 goals in all competitions for the club, including 31 goals alone in League One.

The striker left for Burnley and has since turned out in the Premier League and Championship for several clubs including Queens Park Rangers, Southampton, and West Bromwich Albion.

He netted 139 goals in all competitions before his move to Australia this year.

Despite only being Down Under for six months, it is being widely reported that the striker will return to England as early as next week.

The website news.com.au reports the cause for his early departure is understood to be related to family reasons and it is said that Austin told his Roar teammates on Monday that he would be leaving.

News of a possible departure being likely has caused a stir among Town fans.

“Town should definitely take a look at him as I am sure that he would love to come back,” said Rob Clarke, 49.

“We play good football and its only in front of goal that we need to improve so if we get him until the end of the season, he’s bound to improve our strike force.”

Another fan, Ollie Nash, 26, added: “I think he has unfinished business at Town as he talks about us quite a lot and it seems like a feasible transfer if he’s not worried about the money.”

“He is a proven goalscorer and even just for six months we would take him 100 per cent.”

Andrew Parmenter, 40, said: “He will still score goals in League Two, would be brilliant around the squad and could possibly bring a bit of atmosphere back to the County Ground.

“We need goals and this guy scores them so get the contract signed and get him home.”

Some fans doubted that it is completely the right move for Town but still acknowledged the excitement attached to the rumours.

Dave Abbott, 32, added: “For what its worth, I’m not convinced 2022 Charlie Austin cures Swindon on the pitch, but it would bring some excitement that has been lacking since Port Vale away.”
