SWINDON Supermarine capped off 2022 with a 2-1 victory at home to North Leigh in Southern League Premier South on Boxing Day.

Former North Leigh loanee Conor McDonagh scored the opener for Marine, but the visitors equalised through Aaron McCreadie before the break.

Lee Spalding’s men snatched the winner early in the second half as Harry Williams netted his 25th goal of the season.

North Leigh generated the better early chances on a difficult surface at the Webbswood Stadium, but it was Marine who nabbed the first goal. McDonagh broke into the box down the left before cutting inside and lashing into the far corner for his sixth goal of the season.

But from the next attack, North Leigh hauled themselves level at the end of a swift counter-attack. Jordan Thomas laid off for McCreadie to shoot, and the latter fired past the outstretched arm of Liam Armstrong in the Marine goal.

In the preliminary stages of the second half, Armstrong kept out Will Owens. That save – combined with Brad Hooper’s introduction for Jamie Edge – would prove vital. Hooper was involved in the goal as Henry Spalding found Williams, and the habitual goal-getter plundered the ball past Adam North just shy of the hour mark.

Marine produced the better chances late on as North Leigh looked for a leveller, but they could not find it and the hosts moved up to 10th.

In Southern League Division One Central, Highworth Town suffered a heavy derby defeat to Cirencester Town on home soil.

The Worthians were two goals down inside the first 20 minutes on Boxing Day after conceding twice in quick succession at the Save On Tyres Stadium.

A third goal arrived around the hour mark, while Ciren netted a late fourth to inflict a painful afternoon on Gareth Davies’ men.

It was a similar story of woe for Royal Wootton Bassett Town in the Hellenic League Premier Division on Tuesday as they fell 3-1 to Corsham Town.

Facing their Wiltshire rivals at the Sustain Stadium, Bassett were two goals down inside the opening eight minutes after Niekell Plummer converted an early penalty and Sean Keet poked home from a free-kick.

Corsham centre-back Keet then added his second of the afternoon inside the first half an hour.

Sam Collier sent his team out with the aim of restoring some pride after the break, and they managed it courtesy of a late Matt Jones penalty.

But Bassett could not close the gap any further and lost a league game by more than a single goal for the first time all season.
