SWINDON Town exited January having signed five players and moved three others on, but still the consensus was that Jody Morris’ squad remained a little light.

The Town boss admitted as much in his first pre-match press conference and suggested he would be searching for a couple of new faces to add from the free-agents market.

According to the club’s hierarchy, Swindon remain dead-set on promotion via the top three or the play-offs.

But if they are to go up, Morris’ men will probably need at least a couple of additions to help them achieve it.

With that in mind, Adver Sport has set out three potential statement signings that would signal the club’s intention and could fuel a promotion push.

GEORGE MCEACHRAN

Born in Oxford, McEachran came through Chelsea’s academy and featured 151 times for the Blues at Under 18 through to U21 level. He scored 23 goals and assisted 19 from centre midfield.

The 22-year-old has only made 20 professional appearances, though – 15 of which came for Chelsea U21 in four separate seasons of the EFL Trophy.

He went on loan to Dutch clubs Cambuur and MVV Maastricht, respectively between 2019-21 and provided one assist in three outings for the latter.

McEachran, who was an essential part of England's midfield as the young Lions won the U17 World Cup in 2017, is a ball-playing midfielder who was released last summer and is currently on the look out for a new club.

He was reportedly on trial with League of Ireland champions, Shamrock Rovers in January, but with no deal yet agreed there may be a late opportunity for Morris and Ed Brand to acquire a player they have previously worked with.

TOM CARROLL

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City midfielder Carroll has been without a club since his Ipswich Town contract expired in May.

The 30-year-old made 17 appearances for the Tractor Boys after joining on a one-year deal in the summer of 2021.

Having played most of his career in the Premier League and the Championship, aside from last season with Ipswich, wages could be a stumbling block for the deep-lying creative midfielder. However, Swindon have managed to bring in big-earners for less before, and employment is better than watching Soccer Saturday for a professional player. Sorry, Jeff!

PAUL DOWNING

The Taunton-born centre-back has clubs such as Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, and Doncaster Rovers on his C.V. and has racked up almost 400 appearances across the Football League – almost of half of which were for Walsall.

At 31-years-old and having not played since his release by the Fratton Park club last summer, it would take him a few weeks to get up to speed again, but fans have been crying out for an experienced head at the back to bark orders and guide the young and talented squad through difficult moments. Once fit, Downing could be an inspired choice by Town’s recruitment staff.
