CHIPPENHAM Town manager Gary Horgan chose to “take the positives” out of his side’s fifth National League South draw in a row on Tuesday night.

Following tied games with Ebbsfleet United, Cheshunt, and Hemel Hempstead, the Bluebirds drew 1-1 with Welling United on Saturday.

Alex Bray put Chippenham in front on their travels just after the hour mark, only for Welling’s Kodi Lyons-Foster to equalise 12 minutes from time.

On Tuesday night, Swindon Town’s former Bluebird, Mo Dabre put play-off chasing Worthing ahead early on before Bray levelled two minutes later.

Dabre was given his marching orders in the 27th minute for a second yellow card, but Chippenham could not break 10-man Worthing down and were forced to settle for a point once again.

Horgan admitted it was another missed opportunity for his players but felt the performances in both recent matches were highly encouraging.

He said: “Against Worthing on Tuesday, it was a really positive performance against a really, really good side.

“We created a couple of chances at 1-1 when it was 11v11, and then they have a man sent off which clearly changes the complexion of the game.

“We’ve knocked on the door, but it’s not always that easy to break down 10 men. We went down to 10 against Ebbsfleet a couple of weeks ago, and they weren’t able to unlock us – they’re the best in the league at that.

“The positives are that it’s another game unbeaten and it’s another point towards where we want to get to.

“But like in the past few games, it’s another opportunity lost to pick up two extra points and get ourselves out of that bottom four area.”

The Bluebirds’ recent stalemates leave them in the relegation zone by a point, although Chippenham have played two fewer games than the three sides above them.

With key fixtures against relegation rivals, Concord Rangers and Weymouth in the next few days, Horgan knows it is a pivotal week for the club.

He said: “I’d like to think the unbeaten run has given the players some confidence.

“We’ve amassed over 70 per cent of our points against teams in the top 10 this year. We’ve done that consistently over the past few years.

“What we’ve wanted to get better at this year was beating the sides in the relegation zone because we didn’t get enough points against them last year.

“We know we’re a good side, we’re just having a bit of misfortune in front of goal. But recent results do put a bit of extra pressure on getting a result in both of our next two games.”
