SWINDON Town head coach Jody Morris says he would be in favour of referees conducting post-match interviews to explain key decisions following a controversy-filled display from official, Alan Young against Stockport County on Saturday.

Young, who is also the CEO of Bedfordshire FA, handed out nine bookings – including one to Morris – alongside a red card to Jacob Wakeling during the Hatters’ 1-0 win at the County Ground.

Town survived for 80 minutes with 10 men until Ryan Croasdale’s first-time finish on the counter-attack broke home resistance.

Following the correct award of a first-minute penalty and the justified dismissal of Wakeling for a professional foul, the card-happy whistle blower left both sets of fans frustrated at erratic and inconsistent calls throughout.

Asked after the game whether Morris believes referee’s taking some accountability would be good for the game, he said: “I’ve always liked the idea of referees coming out after the game to explain their decisions because half the time they don’t really want to talk to you anyway.

“At the end of the game, I just went to [Alan Young] and quite quietly asked him to talk me through the penalty incident after theirs.

“He said: “What penalty incident?” Well, clearly not the one they had. He said: “No, that was simulation.” I’m like: “How on earth is that simulation? We’ve looked at it, and it’s a penalty.”

“Obviously, he didn’t want to talk to me then. Some referees are easier to talk to than others. But he didn’t want to talk to me, he just wanted me off the pitch.”

The incident which frustrated Morris most was the decision not to award Town a penalty for an alleged foul on Rushian Hepburn-Murphy moments after Paddy Madden had seen his spot-kick saved by Sol Brynn.

The Town winger went down in the box under pressure from Chris Hussey, but Mr Young felt Hepburn-Murphy dived and produced a yellow card rather than pointing to the spot.

Morris said: “It's the fourth game in a row where we’re not coming away with what we deserved. If we get a point, we can say the players deserved that for the work rate they showed.

“If we get that penalty on Rush and it goes our way, does their man get sent off? Dunno, but judging by what happened today, I’m not sure anyone in the ground would know what decision the ref would have made.

“But the fans saw what we were up against – 10 versus 11 – and then you’ve got some strange decisions which go on in the game. I felt the players dealt with that side of it well as well.”
