The new manager of Swindon Town has revealed that the decision to join the club was a “no-brainer”.

Michael Flynn was announced as the Robins' new boss ahead of their final game of the season on Monday afternoon.

The Welshman looked on as his new team claimed a 2-1 victory under interim coach Gavin Gunning against the visiting Crawley Town.

Town have had three different managers in what has been a turbulent season for the EFL League Two club with both Scott Lindsey and Jody Morris’ dismissals alongside the temporary cameos of Gunning.

The decision to come to the County Ground and follow in their footsteps was an easy one for Flynn who will take charge from the 2023/24 season onwards.

“I knew as soon as I spoke to the chairman Clem after he explained his visions for the club and it’s a healthy budget so for me it was a no-brainer,” he said.

“I was expecting a quiet summer and it might be late September or October time when sacking season comes and I might get a phone call.

“But I am so glad that this happened now because it does enable you to have a stamp on things in terms of preseason but we know it won’t all be fixed by the first game of the season but it’s a building process.”

The new manager’s first goal at the club is to instil a work ethic that emulates pride for the club no matter the result.

“I want to give the supporters a team that win, lose or draw, they can see that they’re fighting for the shirt,” said Flynn.

“I want to have good conversations with the players and we can build something together but just add a few as we go along.”

Flynn has previously managed over 300 games in charge of Newport County and Walsall, getting to know the division well.

“We can all improve and we have all got to have the same goal and that goal is to get out of League Two,” he said.

“There are always things that can improve and anyone who is standing still goes backwards,” he said.

“It’s about that respect for people, respect for the football club, respect for the supporters and respect for the staff. I want to make sure that’s in.”
