SWINDON Town are reportedly “weighing up” a move for ex-Walsall and Newport County midfielder, Joss Labadie.

Town manager Mike Flynn has worked with the 32-year-old at both aforementioned clubs and is said to be considering the midfielder due to the pair’s solid relationship and Labadie’s experience in the fourth tier.

Sunday Mirror Sports News Editor, Darren Witcoop tweeted to say Town were contemplating an offer for Labadie as Flynn looks to build a squad which is capable of fighting for promotion next season.

The combative centre-midfielder is set to become a free agent following his impending release from the Saddlers, where he played just five times under Flynn last term – none of which were starts – as Walsall struggled in League Two.

During that brief period of action, Labadie was sent off for two quick yellow cards in a 2-0 defeat against Crewe Alexandra while also picking up another caution two minutes after coming on in a 1-1 draw with Sutton United.

Ill-discipline has been something of an issue for the 32-year-old throughout his career, with seven dismissals supplementing 139 yellow cards in 429 appearances – on average, a caution every three games.

He was also charged with biting an opponent in 2014 and 2015, receiving a 10-match ban for the first incident at Torquay United and a six-month ban for the second occurrence while playing for Dagenham and Redbridge.

After leaving the Daggers, Labadie enjoyed a more successful time upon signing for Newport in 2016.

Although the first season of his two-year contract was disrupted heavily by injuries and a red card, Labadie captained the Exiles on the final day of the 2016-17 campaign, where they staved off relegation by a single point courtesy of a 2-1 victory against Notts County.

More injury issues badly affected his second year at Rodney Parade, but after being released in the summer Labadie re-signed for Mike Flynn’s men in October 2018 – going on to be a part of the Newport team which reached the League Two play-off final.

Labadie and Newport would go on to lose consecutive play-off finals at Wembley due to late goals, and later signed for Walsall on a two-year deal.

The 32-year-old made 46 appearances for the Saddlers in total without scoring, assisting just one goal. His next professional strike will be the 50th of his career.

Having started his professional career with West Bromwich Albion, the midfielder can count Shrewsbury Town, Cheltenham Town, Tranmere Rovers, and Notts County among his other former clubs.
