SWINDON Town must add to their goalkeeping ranks ahead of next season with the inexperienced Conor Brann the club’s only current option.

Loanee Sol Brynn was one of Town’s leading lights last term but returned to parent club Middlesbrough at the end of the campaign.

As a result of his richly-educational season, the 22-year-old will reportedly be given the chance to fight for the number one shirt at the Riverside.

Brynn’s gain is Swindon’s loss, and Mike Flynn must find a suitable replacement to prop up the club’s attempt at a promotion tilt in 2023-24.

Adver Sport takes a look at a handful of potential candidates.

ALEX CAIRNS

Cairns was allegedly close to joining Swindon last summer before the club opted to bring in Brynn instead.

The Doncaster-born goalkeeper has spent the majority of his career with Fleetwood Town but featured in both of Salford City’s League Two play-off semi-final matches recently at the end of a 26-game spell.

Having been released by Fleetwood, the 30-year-old stopper could be a real bargain for Town. And at 30 years old, he’s in the prime of his career and could stick around for plenty more years yet.

MAX CROCOMBE

This one is potentially a bit of a long shot, but the Grimsby goalkeeper is yet to sign the new deal offered to him by the Mariners and kept two more clean sheets than Brynn last season.

At 6’4, the New Zealander certainly has size on his side. And having featured in the National League play-off final a couple of years ago, Crocombe has experienced big-game pressure.

Although he is a former Oxford United stopper (but only played a handful of games there), who wouldn’t want a player called Maxime Teremoana Crocombe as the number one?!

JAMAL BLACKMAN

The former Chelsea, Wycombe Wanderers, and now Exeter City stopper reportedly enjoyed a strong campaign at St James Park last season, but he was not offered the chance to remain in Devon as the Grecians look to reset.

Blackman has bags of EFL experience – 67 clean sheets in 236 professional outings, to be exact – having played in all three divisions outside of the Premier League.

In his younger days, the 29-year-old won the FA Youth Cup in 2011-12 as well as claiming Wycombe’s Young Player of the Year award in 2016-17.

TOM KING

King was a regular in the Salford City goal for the first half of last season before, ironically in terms of this list, he was displaced by Cairns.

A semi-successful short-term spell at Northampton Town followed courtesy of four clean sheets in eight games, and the Cobblers have offered King a new deal this summer off the back of a season where he kept 16 clean sheets in 34 appearances.

However, the former Newport man has worked with Mike Flynn before, and the lure of a move closer to his hometown of Plymouth could swing a deal in Swindon’s favour.

LUKE SOUTHWOOD

An Oxford-born, former Reading player who last year starred for Cheltenham Town, Southwood’s background is not ideal. But hear me out.

The 25-year-old kept 16 clean sheets in 46 appearances for Cheltenham last season and is expected to field plenty of offers from several EFL clubs this summer due to his high potential and impressive experience already.

Southwood has featured for Hamilton Academical in the Scottish Premiership, Eastleigh in the National League, and Reading in the Championship prior to his temporary Gloucestershire switch.

Another signing on the unlikely end of the scale, but if Swindon managed to convince him to sign, it would be quite the coup.
