SWINDON Town made a winning start to pre-season following a 2-0 victory over neighbours Swindon Supermarine at the Webbswood Stadium on Wednesday night.

Jake Cain scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute and Tom Brewitt notched the second early in the second period on a night where Michael Flynn’s men failed to create too many clear-cut chances against their Southern League Premier South opponents.

In a first-half Town side which featured trialist Jordan Moore-Taylor at centre-back, midfielder George McEachran and right-back Remeao Hutton emerged with the most credit thanks to notable displays.

Tomi Adeloye failed to make the best of an early chance in front of the big dome behind one goal, connecting with less of the ball than he’d have liked, while Marcel Lavinier crashed off target from range.

Cain produced the first real moment of quality 20 minutes in following brave work from Adeloye to gain possession. The midfielder shifted the ball onto his left near the edge of the D and curled into the bottom left corner.

After Adeloye placed just wide from 20 yards, up the other end, Marine saw a decent penalty shout waved away. Tyrese Shade tried to cut out a through ball down the right side of the box but was clumsy in his execution. Luckily for the Robins, the referee – who looked to his assistant for help – was not interested.

Wholesale changes for Town saw the likes of Tom Clayton, Saidou Khan, and Rushian Hepburn-Murphy introduced alongside a handful of youth team players and birthday boy, Charlie Austin.

Goalkeeper Conor Brann was sent on shortly before half-time and gained rare minutes in a Town shirt – later being replaced by Lewis Ward, who was down as a trialist on the official forms.

Shortly after the hour mark, the League Two outfit doubled its lead in simple circumstances. Ricky Aguiar’s right-wing corner was powered home at the near post by Brewitt.

The returning Ward almost provided Marine with a simple chance late on courtesy of a lazy pass towards his left-back, but the dry pitch at the Webbswood dug the visitors’ stopper out of an awkward hole and one of Marine’s trialists was unable to capitalise.

Hepburn-Murphy showed plenty of endeavour in his search for a goal, but the forward’s luck was out as Marine continued to defend doggedly until the end.

Swindon continue their pre-season programme on Saturday afternoon with a game against Melksham Town – kick-off at 2pm at Oakfield Stadium.
