SWINDON Town boss Michael Flynn has revealed that a potential signing is on the verge of being completed, as he looks to add further reinforcements to his side.
Town have brought in just the one player this summer - young goalkeeper Murphy Mahoney on loan from QPR, who has started in both of Swindon’s pre-season friendlies.
But according to Flynn, it seems that supporters could be seeing another incoming over the next few days, in what has been a difficult transfer window for the 42-year-old so far.
He said: “I am close with one, and I think that will get done very shortly.
“It’s been very frustrating, I lost out on one two days ago and it was purely for family reasons, wanting to go further north.
“I’ll be patient, even if I have to keep going until the end of the window, because people might become available later on.
“Like I’ve said before, they’ve got to be the right type of player for this football club and for this team.
“I know its early days, but they’ve [the team] showed at the end of last season and throughout it at times, that there’s some really talented players here, so we just need to add that little bit of extra nous, experience and competition.”
Despite the club’s slow start to business, Flynn will still remain in high spirits considering the number of players already contracted at SN1.
Town’s boss was faced with the task of rebuilding a fragmented Walsall squad last summer, which saw him bring in a total of 24 players.
It’s a far less drastic turnover at Swindon this season, and although Flynn acknowledges that signings still need to be made, he is certainly not planning on rushing things.
“What it does do is take the pressure off into signing the wrong players, that’s why I’m probably a bit more relaxed than some of the fans.
“Yes, we’ve missed out on players for numerous reasons, but that doesn’t mean we should go out and sign someone just because they’re available to us.
“It’s a difficult one, but I’m going to try my hardest to get it right. It gives me a bit of breathing space that I have this many players under contract so early on.”
Flynn admitted in recent weeks that there were certain players within the squad that would be ‘allowed to leave’ if another club came in for them, and it appears he hasn't changed his mind on the situation.
“I’ve been open and honest with them, I’ve not played any mind games or said one thing then done another.
“I’ll always treat them with respect as long as they give it back, they know they’re available to leave, but they also need to be professional and get themselves in the best condition they can be in if somebody comes in for them.”
