Michael Flynn said he was going to continue looking to add to his squad after missing out on his targets on transfer deadline day.

Swindon Town brought in nine players during the summer transfer window, but after the late departure of Jacob Wakeling to Peterborough United and being unable to secure any late incomings, Flynn felt his squad was not of the requisite size to compete.

Flynn revealed that he would continue to look to bolster his playing squad by bringing in players who remain out of contract after the close of the transfer window.

He said: “If everyone is fit, I think we are on 21 players and ideally, I will try and get that up to 23 as soon as possible.

“We will find out next week [how easy it is to get good players who are out of contract], because I don’t want to leave it and I want to get it done.

“We want to be settled and we want to know the squad we are dealing with and the players we have until January.

“We worked tirelessly [during the window] and I slept like a baby last night because I was tired of looking at my phone, speaking to different clubs, different players, and different agents.

“I thought I had one done late on from a League One club, but he decided to go elsewhere. That was difficult to take because I thought we had it over the line.

“As I said, we will look at the free agent market because we need a few more bodies.”

Flynn added that several players he had attempted to bring in during the summer remain available to him as he looks to pad out his squad.

He said: “There are one or two that I have already been talking to and looking at.

“With the Jacob [Wakeling] wages coming back in, we have a little bit more of a choice to make.

“I will be looking for the right players who I think will strengthen us and make us a better team.

“The thing is that I am not going to sign players for the sake of it, I could have just gone straight in and got a late loan or done something like that or made a rash decision.

“I am not going to do things like that, I want players that are going to come in and make us better and I will continue looking for that.”

Despite the manager's keenness to add to the squad, the Robins have started the campaign strongly.

They are unbeaten in their first five league games with two wins and a draw and have the highest goal difference in League 2 currently with seven goals to the good.

Asked after the 6-0 drubbing of Crawley Town last week, Flynn said: "It is about entertaining too. I want us to play attractive football. We’ve got the players here to do it.

“We’ve got to be lucky with injuries and hope we don’t miss key players for long periods of time.

“We played this way for the last couple of years at Newport – probably not as good as this by the way, in terms of our movements and our rotations.

“The way the players are making angles for each other is first class.”
