Swindon Town fans are pleased with the prospect of their home tie against National League club Aldershot Town in the FA Cup First Round.

Michael Flynn’s men learned their FA Cup fate on Sunday as the draw was made for the first round, matching them up against Aldershot.

Cup competitions have not been Swindon’s forte of late, having lost nine consecutive matches across the three domestic cup competitions since a 2-0 win at Walsall in December 2021 set up a glamour tie with Manchester City in the FA Cup Third Round.

Swindon will also have to be wary of facing the National League club as they have been eliminated by non-league opposition in the FA Cup five times in the last ten seasons and seven times since the turn of the century.

However, there is more reason for optimism this time around as in his time with Newport County and Walsall, Flynn has never failed to reach the third round and even got all the way to the fifth round in 2018/19, a feat Swindon have not achieved since 1995/96.

Flynn said after the victory over Newport at the weekend that, “as long as it is at home then I don’t care” and he got his wish with the game against The Shots set to take place at the County Ground between the 3rd and 6th of November.

Town fans shared their manager’s sentiments about the draw and were excited by the potential of making a run in the cup competitions this season.

TheDukeofBanbury said in the Swindon Advertiser comments section: “Decent draw, can only hope for a home game. Close in distance and Shots will bring a few. Had some decent games with them late 70’s and early 80’s. About time we had a cup run but promotion is the priority.”

Get that bus out " BUTLER " added: “Nice to be at home in this round and Aldershot is where Cian Harries ended up playing 15 games so far for them. Nice little earner if we progress 40k.”

Strangelands was also excited by the potential upsides of progression, saying: “Hope so! Get more money getting to the third round of the FA Cup than you do winning the League Cup!”

On Twitter @HarryPreece was already thinking about London hotels in May, saying: “Hopefully we just keep on getting small teams until the final and beat Arsenal like we did in ’69.”
