Former Swindon Town star Jonny Williams was greeted with a frosty reception on his return to the County Ground with new club Gillingham.

The Welsh international, who was Swindon’s top scorer last season and was part of the side that made the League Two play-offs the year previously, returned to the County Ground for the first time with his new club last night.

Williams joined the Gills in the summer after the expiration of his contract at Swindon, with the club choosing not to offer him a new deal.

Gillingham won the game 1-0, with Williams being substituted after 62 minutes, but some fans showed their displeasure over the midfielder’s departure.

From Williams’ first touch on the ball inside the first minute, boos could be heard from certain parts of the County Ground, and this persisted throughout his time on the pitch.

When Keith Millen replaced Williams for George Lapslie during the second half, boos could be heard again, and some home fans reacted to this by attempting to drown them out by clapping him off the field.

Williams, who has 33 caps for Wales, has played more games, scored more goals, and got more assists for Swindon Town than he has for any other club in his career.
