Swindon Town midfielder Liam Kinsella appears to be on the verge of moving to League One strugglers Cheltenham Town.

The 27-year-old has made 23 appearances for the club this season and has impressed the Town faithful with his reliable performances.

But reports on Tuesday linked Kinsella with a move to Gloucestershire and Cheltenham boss Darrell Clarke confirmed his interest in the player when questioned by BBC Gloucestershire on potential signings after his side's 1-0 defeat to Bolton on Tuesday evening.

He had played at Walsall since he was eight years old, making over 250 appearances for them, before he was brought into the Robins fold by their former manager Michael Flynn at the start of this season.

He said: "Two more over the line today, you'll hear more about that," and then when pressed on Liam Kinsella added, "Yeah, that's a strong rumour, yeah."

When pressed, he continued: "I've worked with Kins before at Walsall, 7-out-10 every week, that's his performance, his energy levels are fantastic, and he gives us another body in the middle of the park which is what we need."

On Tuesday evening, Charlie Gordon, senior sports reporter for the Daily Express, tweeted: "Understand Liam Kinsella has already completed his Cheltenham Town medical ahead of free transfer from Swindon Town.

"Midfielder signing 18-month contract. Move effectively done, clubs just waiting for paperwork before it’s confirmed."

Earlier in the day, Jon Palmer of Gloucestershire Live also tweeted: "Cheltenham Town set to complete loan signing of Championship defender and add midfielder Liam Kinsella from Swindon Town on a permanent deal this week."

Kinsella's possible departure has not been received well by Swindon fans who have considered him to be one of the club's stronger midfield options this season and are shocked there's allegedly no fee involved.

If the transfer is confirmed, Kinsella will join Benn Ward, Lewis Ward, Dan Kemp, Jake Young, Remeao Hutton and Murphy Mahoney in walking out the door during the January transfer window.

They could also be followed by Town youngster Harrison Minturn who has reportedly been linked with a possible move to Championship side Middlesborough, according to football journalist  Alan Nixon.

And rumours over Saidou Khan's future at the club are still circulating after he was linked to Wrexham last year.

Paul Glatzel, Jack Bycroft, Pharrell Johnson, Connor McCarthy and Dawson Devoy have all joining Town during the transfer window.
