With Swindon Town still hunting for a new permanent manager to lead the side next season, who do Town fans want in charge of the team?

Swindon have been without a permanent manager since Michael Flynn parted ways with the club in the middle of January, to be replaced by Gavin Gunning as the interim boss for the final 18 games of the season.

The Adver posed the question to readers on X and Facebook about which manager they would want to take over, with the club yet to announce Flynn’s replacement over 100 days after his departure.

The most popular option among fans was the former Swansea City and Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff.

The Northern Ireland international has experience of earning promotion from League Two, having won automatic promotion in his third season with Cheltenham, after missing out on promotion via the playoffs in the Covid-curtailed 2019/20 season.

He then made the playoff final in his first season with Barnsley in League One, only to be defeated by Sheffield Wednesday, although he had a tougher time this season as he was sacked in December of his first season with Swansea City.

The second most popular option among fans is Derek Adams, who along with Gunning is the current frontrunner for the job, with his experience and know-how at getting promotion getting some fans excited by the former Morecambe boss.

There were also multiple calls for ex-Town apprentice Luke Garrard, who recently left Boreham Wood after nine impressive seasons in London; former assistant to Paolo Di Canio Fabrizio Piccareta; and former European Golden Boot winner and current Hartlepool United boss Kevin Phillips.

The most popular response to the question, in general, was not for a specific manager but fans expressing that they did not want Gunning’s interim spell in charge to turn into a permanent one.

The 33-year-old has expressed his desire to earn the opportunity on a full-time basis on multiple occasions since taking temporary charge and was set to have discussions with owner Clem Morfuni over his future whilst he was back in the country.

Only one person was in favour of Gunning taking the job and it was not based on the body of work he had shown in his interim role.

Mike Dixon said on X: “Gav Gunning until we get a proper ownership... he seems to be prepared to take working under this lot, and anyone else wouldn’t.”
