Swindon Town have confirmed the signing of Shrewsbury Town right-back Tunmise Sobowale on a permanent basis ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The 25-year-old arrives with more than 100 appearances in senior football, spending last season in League One with Shrewsbury as he made 29 appearances.

Sobowale will provide flexibility with the ability to play as both an attacking right-back, and can also cover in the middle of the defence and midfield as well.

The defender came through the ranks at Waterford, before having a brief spell at Hercules in Spain as he jumped into the professional game for the first time, before returning to his homeland with Finn Harps to gain more first-team experience.

Having impressed there and also with Athlone Town in the League of Ireland, Sobowale attracted interest from England and his performances earned him a move across to the EFL last summer when the Shrews brought him in.

Speaking after signing with Town, Sobowale said: “I am over the moon and happy to get it sorted and getting it done early.

“After speaking with Mark [Kennedy] I knew where my head was at, and I knew that this would be the right place for me to progress my career.

“The ambition of the club is definitely to get back to League One status first and foremost and that is on the same point as me, especially coming down from League One.

“I want to play in the highest league possible and when I heard he was pushing to get the club back there I was thinking ‘I am all in.’

“The stadium here is lovely and it looks like a stadium where the crowd can influence the game and I am excited to get out there.”

Speaking last season during his time with Shrewsbury, the defender said that he was enjoying the adaptation to English football and was learning a lot playing at that level and coming along well and will now look to continue that at Swindon as he bolsters the team's options at the back.

Head of Football Jamie Russell said of the new addition: “Tunmise brings energy and he is very dynamic going forward and for the two systems that we are looking at, it is really important that we have got athleticism in wide areas.

“He definitely fits that and also it helps that he is a good size, which is important when it comes to defending set pieces.”
