PATRICK Kanyuka could have a future in the heart of Town’s midfield, according to manager Danny Wilson.

The Congolese international centre-back was a surprise pick to play alongside Chris Allen in the middle of the park as Swindon went to Oldham at the weekend.

But he put in an impressive display as the teams shared a goalless draw, and Wilson admitted he may be tempted to employ the 21-year-old there again.

“Patrick is a good foil for young Chrissy because of his stature, but I think he’s got more to offer to us yet, and in that midfield role he might just surprise a few people,” revealed the boss.

“He’s very mobile, he doesn’t have a problem getting around the park, it’s just getting used to the areas and the positions that he has to take up, which are different to those in the back four.

“But I’ve got no worries – I think he can play in an advanced role as well as a defensive one.”

Wilson also dismissed claims that Kanyuka was merely played in midfield to break play up, insisting: “Ask Patrick what I told him to do.

“I didn’t ask him to be a dog or anything like that. I told him to play, because I think he has got the ability and energy to go forward, he can get himself a goal or on the end of crosses.

“It’s just I think the way the game panned out that he ended up sitting where he did – in the second half in particular.

“But we’re not restricting him to sit there and do nothing. He’s go the freedom to go and play.”
