BILLY Paynter believes former strike partner Simon Cox is destined to be a Premier League star, and has urged boss Danny Wilson to sign at least three frontmen to strengthen their ranks.

Cox completed his £2million switch to Championship big boys West Bromwich Albion last week, having passed a stringent two-day medical in the Midlands.

The 22-year-old’s 32-goal haul last season saved Town from League One relegation and Paynter insists his old strike partner could replicate that form at the highest level.

“I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I’ll probably give him a call to find out how it all went and wish him all the best,” said Paynter, who formed a potent duo with Cox last term.

“He’s earned the move by scoring 32 goals last season, and you can’t blame clubs for looking at him.

“The chairman put a price on him which West Brom have matched and I wish him all the best for the future.

“Coxy is a very, very good goalscorer. He is always in the right place at the right time and is very strong for his size.

“I really enjoyed playing with him.

“We struck up a great partnership, and he’s good enough to go all the way to the top.”

Town fans will not have to wait long to see Cox in action again with West Bromwich Albion visiting the County Groud for a friendly on Tuesday, July 28.

But following Cox’s departure, Town have Paynter as their only fit natural forward.

Their other striking option Lee Peacock is continuing his recovery from two back operations, while teenager Lloyd Macklin or new signing Alan O’Brien could also fill in if necessary.

And Paynter believes a few new frontmen are needed for Swindon to be a force in League One next season.

“It’s crazy,” said the Scouser of the situation.

“Peaks is continuing to get fit, the deal for Coxy is done and I’m the only fit striker left at the club.

“The gaffer needs to get some strikers coming in. Obviously we need more because we haven’t got enough, but I’m sure he realises that and is working hard to get some in.

“We probably need about three strikers. It’s his (Wilson’s) decision, but that would benefit the team.

“The gaffer has been unfortunate, especially missing out on the likes of Theo Robinson and Owain (Tudur Jones), but the fact they are willing to spend money shows that they mean business.

“I am confident he will get the right players in.”
