FORMER Swindon Town striker Ashan Holgate has signed for Swindon Supermarine as boss Mark Collier continues his recent busy activities in the transfer market.

Holgate becomes the third ex-Town player in under a fortnight to sign at Hunts Copse, following the arrivals of Chris Allen and David Bampton.

The 23-year-old has just been released by Newport County and can count Weston-super-Mare, Cirencester Town and Eastleigh among his former clubs.

“He’s a big target man who scores goals and has got some presence and physicality,” said Collier.

“We need a big squad with the games continuing to pile up. With a 17 or 18-man squad we’re going to be stretched.”

Collier’s concerns were exacerbated on Saturday when his side’s Southern League home clash against Cambridge City fell foul of the weather.

Meanwhile, a stunning second half strike from Lewis Powell gave Chippenham Town a 1-0 win over basement side Rugby Town at Hardenhuish Park.

The Bluebirds, watched by former Northern Ireland and Fulham boss Lawrie Sanchez, created plenty of chances early on with Ross Adams, Luke Gullick, Alan Griffin and Lewis Powell all going close.

Another Gullick effort bounced down onto the goal-line off the bar before the same man was denied by Rugby stopper Andrew Stevens.

Further opportunities followed for Danny Wring and Powell either side of the break and Alan Griffin’s goal was ruled out Stevens saved superbly from Griffin before Welshman Powell scored the game’s winning goal on 57 minutes, turning smartly before smashing home a terrific low drive from 18 yards.

Rugby improved after going behind but were unable to find an equalising goal, as the Bluebirds held on to record three more important points in the race for a play-off spot.

In Division One South and West, Cirencester Town, who included new signing Sean Wood in their line-up, were 3-1 victors at Hungerford Town.

Lyndon Tomkins converted Carl Brown’s cross after 14 minutes and Brown then got on the scoresheet himself midway through the half as he slotted home a one-on-one.

Ciren’s Tom Etheridge was sent off two minutes after the break for a second bookable offence and Hungerford pulled one back on 74 minutes through Jamie Green.

But a hobbling Jamie Reid made sure of a win for the visitors when he headed home Ciren’s third in added time.
