NICK Watkins has warned Town’s flare throwers they face a lengthy County Ground ban, telling the pair “you are not wanted at our club”.

A 17-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were arrested at the Matchroom Stadium following the incident midway through the second half of Saturday’s goalless draw, which saw a marker pen-sized flare thrown from the away support and set fire to meshing inside the old directors’ box.

Swindon chief executive Watkins condemned the incident and revealed that further action will take place once the men’s legal proceedings have concluded.

“That type of person, or persons, are not people we want associated with the club,” Watkins told the Advertiser.

“Sadly, as is often the case when you have a minority like this, they do their best to tarnish the good name of the club and everything we have been doing over the past two years.

He added: “People like that who behave in that way have got no place at our club. They will absolutely be banned, certainly for a long period of time.

“We don’t want to interfere with what the police are doing at this stage, but we will contact those who have been proven guilty of the offence and then will subsequently take our own action.

“I don’t want their behaviour and I don’t want people’s lives put at risk. It will not be tolerated.”

And with Town making their intentions perfectly clear, Watkins hopes the club’s swift action will prevent any charge from the Football Association.

“I really don’t know at this stage, but we are hoping not,” he said.

“If the club takes the right level of action early and is seen to be acting appropriately, then hopefully the FA will deem that to be satisfactory and will let us continue without getting involved.

“Andrew (Fitton, Town chairman) was sat next to Barry Hearn (Leyton Orient chairman) at the game and I’m sure he apologised there and then.

“But just to make sure, I have emailed their chief executive today (Monday) to apologise, inform them that the situation is under review here and that we will let them know the outcome.”

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “On Saturday, February 27, Leyton Orient played at home against Swindon Town.

“During the match a flare was thrown. Fire stewards attended, where by a small fire was extinguished.

“The alleged offenders were identified and arrested by police. Two males aged 17 and 21 have been bailed to return on April 12.”
