JON-PAUL McGovern believes Town have a “huge” month ahead of them, but is confident they will remain in the promotion shake-up at the end of March.

Six games in four weeks is a tough enough prospect on its own for Swindon’s squad, but that also includes fixtures against leaders Norwich, play-off chasers Bristol Rovers and Milton Keynes Dons, as well as a trip to big-spending Southampton.

Midfielder McGovern insists the players are relishing such a busy spell, and reckons Town have done themselves a favour by heading into the gruelling run 13 games unbeaten.

“I think it’s huge to be fair, when you look at some of the fixtures,” he told the Advertiser.

“We definitely only take it one game at a time, but when you look at the games coming up and the teams that are there then it is a big month for us.

“It will be a big test but one that all the boys are looking forward to.

“We won’t get too ahead of ourselves and if people want to talk about either automatic promotion or the play-offs then that’s up to them.

“We know the fixtures and would have had to play these games at some point through the season, so it doesn’t matter.

“They’ve been brought together now, but if you go into it on a good run then they take care of themselves.”

No stranger to League One promotion having achieved the feat through the play-offs with Sheffield Wednesday in 2005, McGovern is well-placed to judge Swindon’s credentials for a push towards the second tier.

And the 29-year-old sees plenty of the same attributes which got the Owls up to the Championship.

“When you look at the squad and the situation it is quite similar to Sheffield Wednesday,” revealed the Scot.

“There, nobody really spoke about us as contenders for a long time.

“We just crept along and crept along, and the team morale was fantastic to get us through the season.

“It’s the same here. The boys get on really well and do mix away from the game, which helps.

“The manager came in with a definite plan of what he wanted from players and how he wanted to play, and I think we must be one of the best footballing sides in the league.

“I’ve seen a few Championship games recently and I still think we are playing a lot more football than some of the teams up there.

“For me, it’s nice to play in a footballing side as that’s what most players want to do and hopefully we can call ourselves Championship players next year.”
