GORDON Greer should seal a £250,000 switch to League One rivals Brighton by the end of today.

As exclusively revealed on www.thisisswindontownfc.co.uk on Saturday, Town agreed the fee with the Seagulls for their captain on Friday afternoon.

And no complications are expected as Greer has travelled to the south coast club today to have a medical and finalise personal terms on a three-year deal.

Brighton boss Gus Poyet has been chasing the 29-year-old all summer and has finally got his man after seeing a couple of verbal bids and a written offer rejected.

“Everyone knows we were looking for an experienced centre-half, and Gordon is the type of player we wanted,” said Poyet.

"He is an experienced defender and (last year) had a very good season at Swindon.”

The Advertiser understands Swindon valued Greer at £450,000 and chairman Andrew Fitton had voiced his reluctance to sell one of his most important players, but an initial deal way below that valuation has been accepted, although it could include add-ons depending on the defender’s success at the Withdean Stadium.

Greer only had 12 months to run on his Town deal and we also understand that he was keen to stay in Wiltshire, but with a three-year contract on the table at Brighton and Swindon unwilling to open negotiations on fresh terms until October, he has decided to move on.

After a hugely successful loan spell in the second half of the 2008/09 campaign, in which he played a big part in saving Town from relegation, the centre-back signed permanently at the County Ground on a free transfer from Doncaster Rovers last May.

Manager Danny Wilson immediately appointed Greer club captain and he went on to have another impressive season last year, making 53 appearances and scoring two goals as Swindon reached the League One play-off final.

Greer was unable to take part at Wembley having been sent off at Charlton in the semi-final but his partnership with youngster Scott Cuthbert at the heart of Town’s rearguard was one of the main reasons behind their success.

Wilson is now left with a decision to make as to whether Lecsinel Jean-Francois or Sean Morrison are capable replacements for the departing skipper, or if he needs to dip into the transfer market for another experienced campaigner.
