JON-PAUL McGovern is delighted to see Sheffield Wednesday’s future resolved, but warned that his former side have no divine right to occupy League One’s promotion places.

The cash-strapped Owls agreed a takeover by a Milan Mandaric-led consortium this week, which saved the club from likely administration.

But even though the former top flight side retain a sizeable following and a number of household names in their squad, McGovern insists that means nothing as they battle it out in the third tier.

“They’re in League One, they have to prove themselves and win their games and do everything everyone else does,” he told the Advertiser.

“It gives them no divine right because they’ve been taken over that they can win games and get through the league.

“So they’ll still have a massive point to prove when they play us on Saturday.

“They’ve got pedigree. The fact they’ve let Marcus Tudgay go to Nottingham Forest says it all about their strike force at the moment.

“They’ve got the boy (Paul) Heffernan, who’s not actually playing who did very well last year at this level so they’re no mugs at all.

“There are some really good players there who would like to think they could cut it in the Championship at the moment.

“But they’ve got to prove themselves to get there, like ourselves and like every other team.”

McGovern spent two seasons at Hillsborough, scoring in their League One play-off final victory over Hartlepool in 2005.

And the 30-year-old is looking forward to turning out against his old employers.

“They’re such a massive club,” he said.

“I spent time in the area, and my family is from that area. I don’t know what the average crowd is at the moment, but when I was there it was 25,000 in League One, and with the fan base and the stadium they have there you should at least be in the Championship.

“All of us will be training hard, it’s a big game and Sheffield Wednesday will be coming to town with big support.

“Hopefully I can get in the team, and I’d relish playing against one of my old clubs.”
