DANNY Wilson believes Town got the rub of the green for the first time this season, as they defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the County Ground.

Goals from Charlie Austin and Jon-Paul McGovern saw off the high-flying Owls, but the game was not without controversy.

Wednesday were furious that a first half Mark Beevers effort was chalked off by an offside flag, while they also thought Swindon keeper Phil Smith should have received a straight red card for bringing down Lewis Buxton in the build-up to the equaliser.

And although boss Wilson admitted his side were perhaps a touch fortunate, he was delighted to claim all three points.

“There is an argument that he (Smith) should have gone off and they (Wednesday) were calling for that, but we can’t complain about that,” said Wilson.

“We’ve had too many decisions go against us this year. That is the first bit of luck we’ve had for a long time if he was the last man.

“Overall we thank our lucky stars. We conceded a goal but not a man, which obviously helped us in the long run.

“I’m delighted with it. Sheffield Wednesday have got a real calibre in their squad and so you have to admire how well we did.

“We’ve had a bit of luck, both teams have had chances, there have been decisions which have gone for us and against us, but I thought generally it was a very good game.

“We showed a lot of spirit and endeavour and were perhaps fortunate to get the result.

“But if fortune favours the brave then we deserved it, because we had a real go at them today.”

Smith was forced off before half time with an arm injury, also sustained in the controversial incident, and the stopper is now a doubt for tomorrow’s FA Cup second round replay against Crawley.

“We don’t think it’s anything seriously wrong,” explained Wilson.

“But it started to stiffen up and you can’t have a one-armed goalkeeper.

“Dave (Lucas) came on and his experience helped us, particularly in the latter stages where he came for balls, calmed the team down and slowed the game down. He was good for us.”
