HIGHWORTH Town Juniors Under 17s set up a dramatic race for the league title after thumping leaders Quedgeley Wanderers 3-0.

After giving their best performance of the season in a physical encounter, Highworth moved to within two points of the Gloucester side.

Knowing defeat would hand the title to their rivals, Highworth attacked from the off and Becca Ash, Kerry Walklett and Jess Roffey all went close early on.

Six minutes before half time, Walklett won the ball in midfield and put Roffey through on goal, and she drilled low to the goalkeeper’s left.

The lead was extended shortly after the resumption when the goalkeeper spilled the ball and Roffey pounced for her second.

As Quedgeley began to get tough, the Highworth girls dug deep with skipper Shannon Fenton marshalling her defence, backed up by keeper Leanne Deane.

With four minutes to go, Roffey passed to Jordan Higgs on the left and she stepped inside her opponent before lashing into the roof of the net.

By the time Highworth face FC Chippenham next month they will know whether a win means they finish the season as champions or runners-up.

Swindon Spitfires clawed back a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Forest Green Rovers reserves.

Spits created plenty of chances as Dennika Bretti, Catt Baird and Kayleigh Reeves all went close, but they were 2-0 down at the break, After the break Cara Costello broke down the right and found Emma Skinner, whose shot squirmed past the goalkeeper.

In the 63rd minute substitute Lyndsey Ball equalised as she sprung the offside trap and powered her shot home.

Reeves and Ball both had further chances before late on, Spits stopper Julia Caton made a superb save with the opposition striker bearing down on her.
