WITH 15 games remaining for Town to retain their League One status, Jonathan Douglas says Jonathan Obika and Elliot Benyon have a massive role to play as the Robins turn to their new-look front line to power them towards safety.

The Swindon skipper agrees the absence of firepower up top has been a major problem for his side since the summer departure of Billy Paynter and Charlie Austin’s January defection to Burnley.

But after watching the Obika-Benyon double-act in action for the first time at Colchester on Saturday, the former Leeds midfielder is confident in the strike pairing’s abilities to grab the goals that will keep Town up.

“Last year was a totally different game. I’m not saying we had a better squad last year or better individual players but they were scoring a lot of goals that we haven’t had this year.

“I think the two lads up front showed what they’re capable of (at Colchester) and hopefully good things will come from them.

“Hopefully on Tuesday they can show us a little bit more and get us some goals.”

Whilst the two youngsters begin to build a relationship, Douglas insists self-belief remains high at the County Ground, and Danny Wilson and his players are fully focused on the task at hand.

“We’ve got 15 games to go, hopefully we can get a few wins in the next couple of weeks and get the confidence back,” he said.

“We haven’t been getting results away from home but we haven’t even been getting results at home.

“I don’t think it’s from a lack of effort or a lack of team spirit.

“We’ve got a good team and a good bunch of lads here, we just haven’t been getting the results that we’ve needed.

“Some performances haven’t been up to scratch. We’ve always known we can do it.

“No one in the dressing room has thought we can’t do it, it’s just we haven’t been getting the run of the green.”
