SWINDON Spitfires became the first side to beat Salisbury City in the South West Women’s League Eastern Division 1 this season as they chalked up a 1-0 win.

The only goal of the game came on 28 minutes, with Emma Skinner sending a free kick from outside the box over stopper Tara Pitman and into the top corner.

Spits might have had a second before the break but Catt Baird’s delightful cross was palmed away from Cara Costello by Pitman.

Late on Salisbury’s Hayley Ranachan saw her effort smack against the crossbar, and when the visitors had another effort hit the post, it became clear it was not their day.

In the Oxford Mail Girls Football League, Spitfires Under 12s moved top after winning 3-1 against an Oxford City side that went into the weekend on a season-long unbeaten streak.

Spits took the lead midway through the half through Amy Connaghan, but within minutes the hosts were level.

Spits’ one-goal advantage was soon restored, as Kat Reynolds smashed a stunning shot into the net from outside the area.

Spits killed the game off with 12 minutes to go as Daniella Granato directed home left-footed.

Swindon Town Ladies Under 13s extended their lead at the top of the Oxford Mail Girls Football League, after winning their top-of-the-table clash with Didcot Casuals..

Both teams went into the match unbeaten but Swindon came away 3-0 victors thanks to goals from Jessica Graham (2) and Alice Telling.
